A native of Davidson and chair of the market board, Mayes is standing in the heart of the market on a Saturday morning in early summer, surrounded by all the trappings of a thriving grassroots movement:
More than 40 vendors have spread their wares under tents lining a path that meanders down the hill behind the shops and restaurants on Main Street. They’re selling everything from the first cauliflower of the season to all-organic granola. People are walking well-behaved dogs on leashes and visiting with neighbors while they fill their baskets.
